How to Brew Kratom Tea at Home — The Bar-Tested Method

The exact ratios, times, and gear we use behind Noble Tea Kava Bar in Melbourne, FL to brew real kratom tea. About eight sixteen-ounce cups per 100 grams of natural crushed leaf. Roughly $2.50 a cup, the way we do it behind the bar.

TL;DR: Weigh 8–12g of natural crushed leaf per 16oz cup. Simmer covered (not boil) 20–30 minutes. Strain through a muslin bag. Drink hot, chilled, or over ice.

Why brew at home?

A 16oz kratom nitro tea at our own bar runs $9.25. A bottled kratom shot at a smoke shop is $5–$8. Brewed at home from natural crushed leaf, the same 16oz cup costs about $2.50 on a 100g bag — and closer to $1.50 once you step up to a 1kg bag.

That's why our regulars who used to buy tea by the cup end up ordering a 500g or 1kg bag as their default reorder. Once you dial in the brewing method, it's the single biggest lever for cost-per-cup we've seen.

What you'll need

  • Natural crushed leaf kratom. Not powder. Not American Mesh 30. Coarsely broken whole leaf strains cleanly and doesn't leave grit in the cup. Ours ships in 100g, 500g, 1kg, and 5kg bags.
  • A pot. Any saucepan works. 2–3 quart is a nice size.
  • A muslin brew bag or fine mesh strainer. Our Kratom Brew Kit includes everything.
  • A kitchen scale (grams). Non-negotiable.
  • Water. Volume roughly matches your target pour.

The bar-tested method

  1. Weigh 8–12g of natural crushed leaf per 16oz cup. If you're new, start at 10g.
  2. Bring water to a gentle simmer. Not a rolling boil. Just-off-simmer is the target.
  3. Add the leaf, cover, and simmer 20–30 minutes. 25 minutes is the sweet spot.
  4. Strain through a muslin bag or fine strainer. Press the wet leaf to squeeze out the last of the tea.
  5. Chill and serve. Drink warm, chilled, or over ice.

Batching for the week

Gallon batch (128oz, ~8 cups): ~80–100g leaf, ~1.25 gal water, same method scaled up. Shelf life 3–5 days in the fridge.

Vein color, briefly

Same brewing method for Green, Red, and White. Green is the balanced all-purpose default. Red is the slower, more relaxing evening lane. White is the brighter morning lane.

The five most common mistakes

  • Boiling instead of simmering. Kills alkaloids.
  • Under-steeping. 10–15 minutes leaves alkaloids in the leaf.
  • Using powder instead of crushed leaf. Powder doesn't strain cleanly.
  • Skipping the muslin bag. Muslin is the difference between real tea and a slurry.
  • Guessing on grams. Kitchen scale is $10. Get one.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use kratom powder to brew tea?

You can, but you shouldn't. Powder doesn't strain cleanly — crushed leaf gives you real tea; powder gives you a slurry.

How much water should I use?

Roughly match your target pour. For a 16oz cup, start with about 18oz water.

How strong is a 12g pour compared to a 6g pour?

Roughly proportional. 12g is bar-strength; 6g is a light intro cup.

What's the difference between brewing natural leaf and using Instant Kratom Tea Concentrate?

Same input, different format. Our Instant Kratom Tea Concentrate is real natural-leaf tea, brewed at our bar, then reduced to a portable powder. Full spectrum — not an extract or an isolate.
