American Mesh 30 vs. Crushed Leaf Kratom — Which Actually Brews a Better Tea?

A lot of online kratom retailers market American Mesh 30 as “leaf kratom” or “crushed leaf kratom.” It isn't the same thing. Mesh 30 is a medium-fine grind that's harder to strain and makes a noticeably lower-quality tea than true, coarsely broken whole leaf.

What “mesh” means, briefly

Mesh size describes how fine a grind is. A higher mesh number means smaller particles. American Mesh 30 refers to particles small enough to pass through a screen with 30 openings per inch — medium-fine. It's coarser than fine kratom powder (which is often ground to 60–80 mesh or finer) but far finer than true crushed whole leaf, which is coarsely broken and doesn't hit a specific mesh grade at all.

In practical terms:

• Kratom powder — milled to dust. Looks and feels like a spice.
• American Mesh 30 — medium-fine grind. Coarser than powder, finer than crushed leaf. Looks like coarse sand.
• Crushed leaf — dried whole leaf, coarsely broken. Looks like broken tea leaves.

Why the difference matters for tea

If your goal is to brew the best kratom tea you can at home, you want the water to touch the leaf, pull out the alkaloids, and then strain out clean. Two things determine whether that works:

• Surface area for extraction. Finer particles have more surface area, so they extract faster — but you can't strain them out cleanly.
• Strainability. Larger particles strain out cleanly through a muslin bag or fine mesh strainer. Small ones slip through.

Fine kratom powder wins on surface area but loses on strainability — you end up with a suspension that never fully separates, and you drink kratom powder along with the tea. American Mesh 30 sits in the awkward middle: it's coarser than powder but too fine to strain cleanly, so a lot of it ends up in the cup as grit. True crushed leaf is coarse enough to strain cleanly, so what you drink is actually tea.

Why so many retailers sell Mesh 30 as “leaf”

This one's pragmatic. American Mesh 30 is:

• Cheaper to produce. Grinding at scale is fast and easy. Preserving whole-leaf structure takes more careful handling.
• Easier to source. It's the most common grade for wholesale kratom in the US market.
• Higher yield per kilo of source material. Broken bits and stems that would be culled from a whole-leaf batch can be included in a Mesh 30 grind.

None of that is bad in isolation — Mesh 30 has legitimate uses (capsules, toss-and-wash, some baking applications). It just isn't what most customers picture when they buy something called “leaf kratom” or “crushed leaf kratom.” And it makes a lower-quality tea than true crushed whole leaf.

How to tell what you actually got

Open the bag. If it looks and feels like coarse sand or fine coffee grounds, it's ground kratom — usually American Mesh 30 or finer. If it looks like broken tea leaves — you can see individual pieces of leaf, still recognizable as leaf — you have true crushed whole leaf.

Second test: brew it. Ground kratom in a muslin bag will leach a suspension. True crushed leaf will strain out a clean tea with almost no residue.
